Ils font partie de ces artistes dont le nom vous dit sans doute quelque chose, un air de déjà entendu, Angus & Julia Stone. Ça sonne dans nos oreilles sans trop savoir ni où ni quand c’est entré dans notre esprit. Finalement, un jour où notre curiosité mélomane est en éveil, on se décide, on tape sa recherche et on va écouter le premier titre venu. Très vite viendront un second, puis un troisième… C’est un peu ça, leur grande force aux frangin / frangine Stone, ils sont attachants, tout de suite, tout le temps !
Leur histoire discographique débute en 2006 avec le maxi Chocolates and Cigarettes, qui sera rapidement suivi du second EP Heart Full of Wine. Leur premier album, A book like this, a vu le jour en 2007. Après la sortie de cet album, le duo fraternel s’est entaché de parcourir le globe dans tous les sens et aura très vite fait d’avoir propager leur bon son sur tous les continents. Bon, il faut dire aussi, ils sont australiens originaires de Sydney, ça aide à jouer en Océanie…
Et c’est de leur nouvelle vie de globe-trotter que naîtra l’excellent album Down the Way sorti en mars 2010. Pour l’occasion, ils auront tout produit eux-mêmes et enregistré aux quatre coins du Monde. On retrouve notamment sur cet album la track Big Jet Plane qui elle aussi a dû faire plusieurs fois le tour du Monde. Un troisième album est né dans la foulée en décembre 2010, Memories of an old friend.
Dans ce qu’il y a d’attachant chez Angus & Julia, c’est avant tout une écriture soignée, qui raconte leur aventures émotionnelles. Leur complémentarité est tout juste folle tant il paraît inconcevable de les séparer. Ils chantent et jouent de la guitare tous les deux, leurs voix à chacun sont limpides, leurs ballades ne demandent qu’à vous emmener… On se situe dans un répertoire folk vraiment riche et pur. Une pratique drôle et intéressante qu’ils proposent également, c’est la self-reprise, sauf que là où Angus chantait, c’est soeurette qu’y s’y colle, et ça marche aussi à l’envers. Ecoutez Hollywood puis Johnny and June par exemple, c’est vraiment sympa de pouvoir mettre en parallèle leur voix et leur manière d’interpréter une chanson qui leur appartient maintenant à tous les deux ensemble et indépendamment l’un de l’autre.
Pour l’avenir, on aura droit dans l’année à un album solo pour chacun des deux Stone suivi de la traditionnelle tournée respective avant le retour du duo prodige. Il y a tout de même fort à parier qu’on arrivera à les croiser ensemble sur certaines dates pour quelques morceaux du crew…

The Stone crew, it’s all about brotherhood
They are this kind of artists you’ve probably already heard the name : Angus & Julia Stone. The name sounds familiar in our hears, without knowing clearly where and when we heard it. One day, you finally decided to google the name to learn a little bit more. You listen to one song and it was such good that you can not stand so, and you listen a second one, a third one…
Their first EP, Chocolates and Cigarettes was released in 2006, quickly followed by a second one, Heart full of Wine. One year later will appear a first LP titled A book like this. This one will permit the Stone to play all over the World, discovering each corner and bringing their sweet music there. We also have to say that they come from Australia, and when you live there, you have to reach the whole World… Thanks to this new globe-trotter’s life, they’ll record a new LP by their own, Down the way (march 2010). It’s exactly so they did, they record their tracks on the way, between New York and Sidney, crossing London and Scotland. From this new LP is extracted the famous Big Jet Plane track, that many of us should have already listen to. Not even one year is passed, and they’re already back with another LP, Memories of an old friend (december 2010).
What is really interesting with Angus and Julia is the way they write and live their songs. It’s really well written, the voices are clear and pure, and they fit so well together that it seems crazy to separate them. They both sing and play guitar and give us those ballads that only want to tack you without come-back. We are exactly in the center of the folk trend of nowadays, it’s simply magic.
There’s something else interesting too, their self-cover-songs. Let’s compare Hollywood and Johnny and June for example. On one hand, we have Angus singing, one the other hand, Julia. And it’s not all about the voice, the music is also re-arranged with their specificities. And finally, the brother is as usefull as the sister in the way to help the other, and you can imagin them together and each one independently. That’s what we can expect now…
Yes, cause what’s forcoming is now an album form Angus Stone and one from Julia Stone, and they’ll play « alone » too with their new album in 2012. But I bet some of us will get the luck to see them together on stage, somewhen, somewhere…
